A proof-of-concept from NCR Atleos aims to deliver improved ATM UIs in a double-sided format.

The traditional ATM has many limitations, such as the fact it can take up a lot of space, and only one customer can interact with the machine at a time. This can cause frustration for customers who have to wait in a long line while another customer finishes a more complex transaction.
This can even lead to security issues when criminals wait for a customer to finish withdrawing cash and then steal it from them later.
ATM manufacturers have tried multiple techniques to resolve these issues, from better UIs that improve transaction speed to placing multiple ATMs in a single location. NCR Atleos is answering this issue with a small form factor dual-sided ATM, where two customers can transact on separate screens across from each other.
This proof-of-concept device uses shared safes and a PC core to provide a smaller footprint, alongside 3D printed components for reduced weight and waste. In order to create this device, NCR Atleos tapped into AI to find the most optimized construction that would meet customer's needs while saving money as well.
ATM Marketplace spoke with Neill Harris, executive director of products for self-service financial access at NCR Atleos, to learn more about this proof of concept.
Q. What are some of the key features of this dual-sided ATM?
Harris:
Q. Will it have cash recycling features?
Harris: The concept is designed to house up to two major media handling devices. i.e., dispenser, deposit, recycler or mixed media devices can be accommodated.
Q. How does it utilize AI?
Harris: NCR Atleos advanced in the dual-sided ATM concept, leveraging company expertise and AI-assisted design, to optimize form factor, sustainability and efficiency. This approach demonstrates innovation with the support of AI by Atleos — focused on design evolution, without embedding AI into ATM software stacks, ensuring security and compliance remain uncompromised. All that being said, again, AI is not embedded into ATM software stacks, ensuring security and compliance remain uncompromised.
Q. How will it improve efficiency/customer experience?
Harris: Two functional sides enable simultaneous customer transactions. Shared safes and PC core and power supply reduce cost, weight and complexity compared to legacy dual-sided designs, or two separate ATMs.
Q. How does it use 3D printing?
Harris: To produce components for reduced weight, manufacturing waste and rapid prototyping.
Q. How will it ensure security for customers using the device at the same time?
Harris:Customers are on opposite sides of the ATM ensuring privacy for their transactions.
Q. Any other innovative features you'd like to highlight?
Harris: The footprint is roughly three square meters. Its unique and distinctive form factor facilitates a strong brand presence and eye-catching visual appeal.
Q. Do you have a general timeline of when this will be available for commercial use?
Harris:This NCR Atleos dual-sided ATM remains in proof-of-concept phase and is not on the current research and development roadmap for commercialization.
