WAIANAE, Oahu, Hawaii -- Two men making an early morning visit to a Blockbuster video store apparently were more interested in reliving "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" than in renting it. A video surveillance camera caught the pair using a stolen garbage truck to try to steal an ATM from the store at the Waianae Mall.
According to the Hawaii Channel.com, Honolulu police said that the thieves repeatedly rammed the ATM at about 3:30 a.m., knocking it off its foundation. However, the ATM didn't break loose from its bolts in the floor and the would-be thieves fled when police arrived.
According to police, the men had modified the stolen dump truck by cutting off the fingers which are used to lift trash dumpsters and installing a makeshift plate and chain.
The front glass of the Blockbuster Video store was destroyed and debris littered the store, according to the manager. The store was closed for a full day following the attempted heist.
Honolulu police said that they hope to release the surveillance video if the quality is good enough.
