Some 7,700 visitors from 50 countries attended the recent technology showcase, showing why the world looks to Paderborn, Germany, during the annual event.
March 8, 2004
By the time the silver-suited mime descended from the 8-foot-tall Wincor Nixdorf logo for the last time, 7,700 people from 50 countries had visited the annual technology showcase in Paderborn, Germany, known as Wincor World.
Filling the mammoth Welle Exhibition Center, the attendance represented an increase of about 10 percent over last year's event.
Officials from Wincor Nixdorf and the 60 partners who also exhibited said they were highly satisfied with the exhibition. Not only was attendance up, but so was the level of expertise evident in discussions with visitors.
Organizers were especially pleased to see an increase of around 40 percent in the proportion of foreign visitors who came from more than 50 countries and used Wincor World to find out more about the latest developments in the banking and retail industries.
The lectures and the Retail Innovation Conference opened by Minister Harald Schartau really drew the crowds. The RIC alone, held under the joint auspices of the European Retail Institute and the North-Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of Trade and Labor, was attended by 430 top managers from the retail sector.
Banking, generally
The financial services market is currently undergoing change: strategic mergers between international financial services providers, market entry by non-banks, social change and informed, discriminating customers are placing ever greater demands on banks.

Show guests were exposed to the future of self-service banking technology in a dedicated exhibit area. |
Much of the technology and many of the service operations on display were designed to cut costs associated with meeting these increased demands. The solutions were divided into three main areas:
Cash processes in the branch. Up to now, handling cash transactions -- from placement of a cash system replenishment order with a cash-in-transit operator to replenishment of the cash systems and the final posting -- was extremely time-consuming and expensive. Under its "cash" theme, Wincor Nixdorf presented consulting modules, software and hardware solutions designed to guarantee optimal interaction for secure, efficient cash processing.
Multichannel. The pressure of customer demand and a competitive environment have driven banks to introduce a variety of independent electronic delivery channels within a short space of time. Wincor Nixdorf presented ProClassic/Enterprise, a solution kit for a forward-looking system architecture that gradually converges the multiple channels onto a single platform.
Branch process optimization. Also on display were future-oriented branch concepts that harmonized design and processes to suit individual requirements. In the "branch" section, Wincor Nixdorf showcased both a self-service and a mini-branch with the appropriate hardware and software configurations.
Monitoring
Wincor Nixdorf is able to integrate the technology and functionality of its core products, ProView, ProCash/FOnet, ProClassic/Enterprise and ProCash Analyzer, into business intelligence solutions.
End users can define formats themselves for ad-hoc analysis and reporting. The resulting information can be made available to users at all levels inside and outside the company via Wincor Nixdorf's Web-based information portal.
Business intelligence by BusinessObjects Access, analysis and joint use of corporate information inside and outside the company
Document Management System by Saperion Holistic solutions from a single source for enterprise- wide document and knowledge management
PC-based System for Self-service System Monitoring and Administration with ProView
Multichannel
Multichannel sales function effectively if all delivery channels are merged onto a universal IT platform. This can be achieved with ProClassic/Enterprise, a framework (middleware) that links the bank's host system to different customer delivery channels and provides the basis for a state-of-the-art software architecture.

ProClassic/Enterprise contains the entire business logic, which is shifted onto network-centric servers, thereby reducing the costs involved in operating and managing a client/server architecture.

Multi-vendorOpen systems and software architecture complying with the XFS standard allow multi-vendor environments to be established in self-service scenarios. The central application software controls peripherals from Wincor Nixdorf and its competitors, irrespective of the devices that are installed.
Cost-effective branch operations The branch has maintained its status as the hub between the financial services provider and its customers, and it will continue to play a central role in the future. It offers personal contact and the trustful environment that is vital for building successful customer relationships and loyalty.
Nevertheless, the earnings situation in the branch business is forcing banks to rethink their traditional structures--technology, interior design, employees and organization. Wincor used examples of concrete branches (branch design, self-service branch, mini branch) and consulting to show how optimization of the cost base is compatible with improved customer focus and how Wincor Nixdorf's design can be implemented with a holistic solution concept.
Branch design. The branch as a meeting-place: work terminals, customer service zone, technology and interior design geared to an attractive setting and successful sales are vital components of the new delivery concept. Consulting, planning and project management from Wincor Nixdorf provide support in branch projects from design to branch opening, and prove that cost optimization, flexibility and increased customer focus need not be mutually exclusive goals.
Installation concepts. Individual branch design requires individual installation concepts. Together with partner Concept Bankware, Wincor presents solutions for optimal lobby design. The portfolio offers various installation frames for self-service systems, options that enable ATMs to be used by people with disabilities and a broad range of accessories.
Mini-branches are gaining popularity since they can be operated at low cost. A new software solution showed how banks can use self-service machines as a low-cost alternative to teller-based service, while maintaining personal contact with the customer and complying completely with legal stipulations.
Self-service branch. Cash deposits and dispensing, check processing, statement and document printing, credit transfers and even simple consulting services can now be handled around the clock on self-service systems. Among the systems Wincor offers are:
Security Based on the years of experience it has gained in banking installations and electronic credit transfers, Wincor Nixdorf has developed its universal security concepts for banks. They cover individual as well as national requirements. In addition, Wincor-Nixdorf offers banks the chance to phase in solutions that will be able to handle the increasing security demands of the future.
The automation of front-office, self-service and back office processes generates a continual increase in the volume of business-critical and personal data. User groups that were previously closed are now increasingly being linked to public networks. To meet these needs: ProTect/Work, a biometric authentication and single sign-on solution.
Criminal attempts to manipulate ATMs and other self-service machines and make fraudulent use of cards are becoming more sophisticated. Wincor-Nixdorf presented various effective concepts to protect the customer/technology interface and, through preventive measures, to generate greater acceptance.
Cash processes in the branch
As part of Wincor's focus on cash processes in the branch, it showed how banks can shift standard transactions to self-service machines to the benefit of their customers, and how they can optimize cash replenishment and replenishment intervals for their cash points. They also presented methods that support decision-making for selecting the most cost-effective cash systems and that ultimately determine the optimal combination and configuration of cash systems for individual branches.
Cash processes still offer untapped optimization potential and this is where Wincor's solution portfolio for individual branch cash processes comes into its own.
Software-based analysis, flexible integration, capable solutions and the use of innovative recycling and deposit technologies allow banks to make major cost savings without restricting their customer service. Capacity is freed up for staff to deliver a top quality consulting service, thereby offering a vital factor in competition.
Deposit and recycling technology Wincor demonstrated how standard cash transactions in the branch can be shifted to self-service to the customer's advantage. The focus here was on self-service solutions for cash deposit and cash recycling, which offer various degrees of optimization and savings potential.
Wincor Nixdorf has analyzed the entire process involved in automating deposits: from single document processing to processing bundles of banknotes and documents and cash recycling. The automation of cash processes is rounded off by self-service coin processing, banknote processing and teller-based cash recycling. With a suitable product portfolio, banks can compile an array of self-service functions to suit the needs of their individual locations and customer profiles.
