DENVER - Western Union and the Mexican state of Michoacan have signed an agreement to expand Western Union's 4x1 program into Mexico.
According to a news release, Western Union will contribute $1.25 million to the program, which will help fund development projects in Mexican communities that experience high levels of migration and poverty.
Western Union is the first private-sector company to participate in the program. (Read also, First Data moves forward with Western Union spin-off) The company will join hometown associations of Mexican migrants living in the United States and local, state and federal jurisdictions of the Mexican government. The efforts aim to improve economic opportunity and quality of life in communities throughout Mexico.
According to the Institute for Mexicans Abroad (IME) there are approximately 583 Mexican hometown associations located in 30 states in the U.S.
