Wells Fargo adds 'talking' ATMs in Utah, Iowa

January 20, 2002

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah and DES MOINES, Iowa -- Wells Fargo has introduced "talking" ATMs at approximately 58 locations in Utah and approximately 14 locations in Iowa.

A rollout of ATMs with audio capability will continue through 2002 in both states, according to Wells Fargo.

The ATMs provide private voice-guided instructions via an audio jack and earphones on how to deposit money, withdraw cash, transfer funds and buy stamps. Customers can also use the new ATMs to hear account balances for primary checking, savings and market rate accounts.

Customers can identify these machines by an audio decal on the front of the machine and an earphone decal near the audio jack. Both decals are in large print and Braille.

Working with the California Council of the Blind, Wells Fargo announced in June of 1999 that it would pilot 20 talking ATMs in California; now over 800 talking machines have been installed in that state. Following the success of its California effort, Wells Fargo began installing the ATMs at locations across the country.

In Utah, Wells Fargo worked with the Utah Council of the Blind (UCB). In Iowa, the Iowa Council of the United Blind assisted Wells Fargo.

Customers can find the talking ATM nearest to them by calling (800) 869-3557 or by visiting www.wellsfargo.com and clicking on the Talking ATM Locator link at the bottom of the screen.
