As Vermont lawmakers prepare for their next legislative session, advocacy group AARP Vermont is pushing for restrictions and tighter oversight on cryptocurrency kiosks, citing growing concerns about consumer fraud particularly among older adults. According to a Rutland Herald report, the group argues that many users do not fully understand how cryptocurrency works, making them more vulnerable to scams.

Vermont lawmakers have already taken steps to limit potential harm. The state previously enacted a moratorium on new crypto kiosks and imposed requirements for operators to refund fraud victims who report losses within a set time frame. The law also introduced transaction caps and increased state oversight to reduce the scale of potential losses.

AARP Vermont is also advocating for new rules that would allow banks and credit unions to freeze or delay suspicious transactions and notify trusted contacts when fraud is suspected. Alongside those efforts, public education campaigns in the state continue to focus on helping consumers recognize common crypto scams.
