Verifone software used to allow Italian consumers to load phone time at ATMs

January 16, 2002

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- VeriFone, a division of Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HWP), and a manufacturer of POS terminals, says that its e-Payment Server Software has been selected by Wind, an Italian telecom operator, to let customers reload value or "top-up" their pre-paid mobile telephone accounts at ATMs.

Using VeriFone's ePS, Wind customers will be able to revalue their pre-paid mobile accounts at any cash machine across Italy. After inserting their ATM card and keying in their PIN, subscribers simply input the phone number of the account to be recharged and the desired amount. The credit is added immediately.

The VeriFone software connects Societa' per i Servizi Bancari (SSB), a developer of computerized services for banks, to the intelligent network adopted by Wind to handle pre-paid calls.

"VeriFone's ePS solution has given Wind flexibility in integrating transactions with its services," said Franco Grimaldi, director of network for Wind.

According to a VeriFone release, the Internet-based software offers telecom operators, businesses and financial institutions a common platform for the instant processing of electronic payments. Because a variety of payment processing capabilities can be included in a single platform, Verifone says costs can be reduced and processors and other payment service providers have more flexibility in designing new applications.
