Use of Japan's post office ATMs increasing

TOKYO -- People in Japan used ATMs at post offices to access accounts at private financial institutions and vice versa 40 million times in fiscal 2000, double the rate of the previous year, according to a report in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun.

The number of financial institutions affiliated with the government-run postal savings system is increasing, and more bank customers are using post office ATMs to access their accounts.

As of April 2, about 2,000 banks and other financial institutions were affiliated with the postal savings system, including five major city banks, 28 regional banks and consumer credit companies.
