USA Payments files suit over casino ATMs

January 21, 2002

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- USA Payments, Inc. filed suit April 12 against the Tropicana Casino in Las Vegas for operating unlicensed ATMs the company contends infringe its patented technology.

USA Payments owns U.S. Patent 6,081,792, which protects advancing cash through ATM-type machines when the request exceeds the cardholder's daily withdrawal limit. The technology automatically transfers the request from the ATM network to a POS debit transaction and/or credit card cash advance.

Global Cash Access (GCA), based in Las Vegas, is the exclusive licensee of USA Payments' ATM technology for use in the gaming industry and has installed more than 1,000 such machines in casinos under the "Casino Cash Plus 3-in-1 ATM" brand.
