U.S. Bank completes fleet-wide ATM upgrade

April 22, 2014

U.S. Bank has announced the completion of a major upgrade to its 5,000-ATM fleet in an overall strategy to implement new technology and machine enhancements. The bank worked closely with Diebold Inc. on the project, a news release from the FI said.

The comprehensive project began with the incorporation of new ADA regulations, and included the rollout of ATM deposit automation, replacement of older machines in the fleet, and migration of ATMs to the Windows 7 operating system.

Following the upgrade, the average age of ATMs in the U.S. Bank fleet is five years, the bank said in the release.

U.S. Bank said it is one of the first major banks to complete the conversion of its entire ATM fleet to Windows 7, avoiding the need to purchase extended support from Microsoft.

"We are very pleased to have completed our conversion in a timely manner, avoiding future expense or exposure," said Jeannie Fichtel, EVP of U.S. Bank 24-hour banking. "Data security is very important to us, and while upgrading to Windows 7 is not our only defense, it is an important piece of our overall security measures."
