NEW YORK - Tour guides from the United Nations will help staff emergency relief and assistance kiosks set up in New York in the wake of the terrorist attack on Sept. 11.
The American Red Crossis operating the kiosks with assistance from Compaq Corp. and Microsoft (see story: Kiosks part of Red Cross victim access efforts). The kiosks provide information to New Yorkers and visitors to the city and offer support to friends and family members of people missing following the attacks.
The project, called "Register to let other know you are OK", also provides access to a Web site featuring a registration service. The service provides a communication outlet for attack survivors and their friends and family members.
The guides will answer questions and provide assistance at the kiosks. The kiosks have so far been placed in 27 locations-mostly banks, coffee shops, and government buildings, in New York City, primarily in Manhattan.
