Union Planters first to install Internet ATM

MEMPHIS, Tennessee -- Financial giant Union Planters Corp., based in Memphis, has installed the first production model Internet ATM, which was jointly developed by Diebold and FundsXpress. Customers will gain Internet access and be offered robust financial management tools at select ATMs in the Memphis area. Customers will have access to Internet-based banking content and other financial service information previously available only through a home or office PC. Union installed the first Internet ATM at its Cordova, Tenn. branch where users can access additional account information from UPOnline, the bank's secure Internet banking service. Diebold's OPTinet software technology enables the ATM to leverage the existing authorization network and connect to a financial institution's Internet site for additional transaction or marketing information. Union Planters is using the Diebold and FundsXpress Internet solution to extend the capabilities of its ATMs and enable customers to obtain a detailed look at their account history or transfer funds from one bank product to another, while also allowing them to receive important messages from the bank. Eventually, the bank's customers will be able to pay bills at any Internet ATM. "This technological breakthrough adds value for our customers and we anticipate this program to be a success," said Benjamin W. Rawlins Jr., Union Planters' chairman and chief executive officer. Roy Shirah, senior director of product planning and management for Diebold, agreed, adding that this could mark an evolution in the ATM industry. "Financial institutions now have the opportunity to leverage the information they have about customers in order to provide additional services." The new technology opens a realm of e-banking as a new avenue of customer service offered by financial institutions customers, said FundsXpress chairman and chief executive officer, John A. Burns. "You can pay your bills, get stock quotes and manage your money from any of these new generation ATMs. "Of course, you can continue to get money immediately," added Burns.
