Toshiba enters banknote recognition market with new CISM

Toshiba Corp. has announced its entry into the linear image-sensor market for banknote recognition applications, starting with a contact image-sensor module. Applications for the new CISM include ATMs and other banknote counting and sorting machines.

Toshiba already offers products for scanning applications, such as MFPs and text and image scanners, as well as sensing applications, such as barcode readers. The company has now broadened its portfolio with a linear image-sensor that offers approximately four times the infrared sensitivity of existing Toshiba products.

These new sensors are integrated into the CISM, which is scheduled to go into mass production in June 2013. This first Toshiba CISM was developed with the Chinese market in mind; it meets that government's enhanced requirements for banknote recognition systems under the national standard.

Toshiba said it intends to follow its initial product launch with iterations that feature thinner module cases, variations in effective scanning length and improved data rates. The company is also considering the development of customized module cases, per customer request.

Features of the Toshiba CISM include:

1. Integrated high-sensitivity linear sensors;
2. Effective scanning length of 183mm (for Chinese notes);
3. Resolution suitable for banknote recognition (200dpi and 100dpi, selectable).
