Tokyo ATM blitz fails to curb fraud
October 22, 2008
AsiaOne: A massive blitz by police in Toyko to keep a watch out over the summer for ATM scammers failed to prevent 16 ATM-related in Greater Tokyo. Criminals have been targeting mostly elderly victims and posing as cash-strapped relatives, getting the victims to go to ATMs to transfer money to accounts provided by the scammers. October was designated by police nationwide as the month to stamp out ATM scams. Some 6,000 officers were mobilized to monitor ATMs at 12,000 locations across Tokyo, but 94 incidents of people being duped still occurred.
