NEW YORK CITY -- As crowds gathered in Times Square to welcome the New Year and thousands of police looked on, thieves scored big at a Citibank ATM vestibule. According to the New York Post, the burglars broke through the floor of a vacant apartment to get into the vestibule. There, they found nine ATMs loaded to capacity to serve customers who might make a last-minute cash run before midnight. First the thieves jammed a nail into the card reader outside the vestibule to keep customers out, then went through two layers of plywood flooring in the apartment and dropped down to the area where the machines are serviced. They tried to break into six ATMs but only got cash from three before fleeing the scene. The FBI is investigating the case.
