Thief jackpots South Carolina ATM for $23K

A thief stole $23,000 from an ATM in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina by jackpotting the device. Police suspect this individual is involved with two other ATM jackpotting incidents in the area as well, according to a report by the Island Packet.

The individual used a key to access the ATM's hardware and then used two cell phones to upload malware into the system's motherboard. In the other two incidents, there was no money stolen, although the machines were tampered with.

All of the ATMs belonged to Coastal States Bank, which first learned about the incident when technicians received reports that the machines needed servicing.

The suspect was seen on camera wearing gloves, hooded sweatshirt, face mask and a hat.
