The answer man

Still trying to answer our trivia questions? Stop wracking your brain. Dennis Aoyagi of Tokyo, Japan has all the answers. We reveal them here.

June 30, 1999

Dennis Aoyagi, a deputy manager of product planning for Toshiba TEC in Tokyo, Japan, is the newest member of the ATM Industry Association. He won a year's free membership in the ATMIA by correctly answering 10 trivia questions drawn from the pages of the magazine. He's been a reader of ATMmagazine.com since he found out about us at the BAI Retail Delivery show in Las Vegas last December. He says that reading the magazine has helped him learn more about ATM usage in the U.S. and Europe, which comes in handy since his department helps design ATM parts marketed to those areas. The answers to all 10 questions follow, along with the names of those who won ATMmagazine.com mouse pads: Q: Name the top four ATM manufacturers in the U.S. in 1998, based on number of units shipped (in order, please). A: NCR, Diebold, Triton and Tidel. The order is significant, since this marks the first year NCR overtook Diebold in the U.S. Winner: Ron Macdonald of Dundee, Scotland Q: What is the name of Connecticut's attorney general, an avowed foe of the ATM surcharge? A: Richard Blumenthal, who said, "I will vigorously fight any of (the OCC's) efforts to force our state's consumers to pay these double charges that serve only to boost the banks' bottom line." A District Court judge recently ruled in the OCC's favor, but state regulators plan to appeal. Winner: Terry Cole of Camden, Tenn. Q: What do VSAT and CDPD stand for? A: Very Small Aperture Terminal and Cellular Digital Packet Data. VSAT uses a satellite network to transmit data. It's been a key part of some recent big deployments, including a deal Card Capture Services made with owners of Chevron stations. CDPD is a wireless communication that uses existing cell phone system infrastructure. It was first used to authorize POS transactions without a phone line. Winner: Ernesto Daniel Rubado of Buenos Aires, Argentina Q: What famous crime fighter served as Diebold's chairman of the board in the 1940s? A: Eliot Ness. The former Untouchable served on the board from 1944 to 1951. About the same time he left Diebold, Ness also lost his bid to become mayor of Cleveland Winner: Dennis (Susumu) Aoyagi of Tokyo, Japan Q: On which continent are ATMs with cash-recycling capabilities most popular? A: Asia. The HT 8000, manufactured by Hyosung, is popular with Asians. Hansup Kwon, of Hyosung subsidiary Cross International Technologies, thinks it's less likely to appeal to Western ATM users. "In the U.S. it's generally a one-way street," he said. "People want to get money out of an ATM rather than putting it in." Winner: Jill Vala of Redmond, Ore. Q: What New Jersey company is spearheading the use of iris scanning technology at the ATM? Hint: It's not an ATM manufacturer. A: Sensar Inc. The company's technology won raves at a pilot in Swindon, England. In its first major U.S. rollout, it's being deployed on Diebold ATMs by Bank United of Texas. Winner: Tom Bigelow of Phoenix, N.Y. Q: Which state lifted a prohibition on ATM surcharging on May 1? A: Nebraska. Networks, the state's EFT network, dropped its ban on surcharging in an effort to get spiraling interchange fees under control. Winner: Jason McGill of Peachtree City, Ga. Q: What's the alias of a particularly brazen ATM con artist who has offered tips for other would-be criminals on his own Web site? A: The Raven. According to him: "New York City (My Home!) is the leader in ATM con jobs. Altogether, about 2,000 Citibank users were victimized by ATM con artists in one year's time [year not specified] for a tune of $495,000!! So I'm going to spread some light on ... how these cons are pulled off." Winner: Perakh and Associates of San Diego, Calif. The following bonus questions were answered by Dennis Aoyagi. Congratulations to Ron Macdonald and Ernesto Daniel Rubado, who also submitted correct answers. Q: Who is "the Dutchman" and where does he work? A: Bernard Uiterwijk of Intellicash ATM. After spending nearly a year of his life as a beach bum, then being thrown out of businesses repeatedly during failed sales calls, Uiterwijk went on to become a successful salesman with Intellicash in Newark, Calif. Q: Which bank installed one of the first ATMs in the U.S. in September of 1969? A: Chemical Bank, at a Long Island branch. The bank hyped the installation with a large ad in the local paper which read, "Our new branch will open its doors at 9 a.m. on September 3rd and never close again!"
