TD Bank Group is testing "Smart ATMs" at selected locations in Canada. According to a press release, the devices incorporate self-service technologies that allow TD to offer more transaction options and greater customer convenience.
A first in Canada, the ATMs offer enhanced withdrawal and deposit functionality, including the ability to choose banknotes in various denominations, and to deposit checks using image-enabled technology, the release said. Additionally, TD Smart ATMs feature an intuitive user interface with larger typefaces and touch screens, plus the option to get on-site help from branch staff.
"Smart ATMs are a natural extension of TD's comfort and convenience promise," said Jim Grimmer, vice president for the North American ATM channel at TD. "Customers visiting the branch for routine transactions will now be able to enjoy a faster level of self-service, while those who need assistance with more complex matters will also be served more efficiently, as our customer service representatives will have increased capacity to attend to more specific customer needs."
Four branches in Ontario have been chosen as test sites based on over-the-counter and traditional ATM transaction volumes, defined peak service periods, and the ability of the branch to accommodate the devices, which are located at the end of traditional teller counters and in common spaces.
TD said feedback from users will ensure that the new technology meets current customer needs and indicate any additional capabilities that users might wish to have incorporated.
"Early feedback from customers on the added convenience has been very positive," Grimmer said. "We'll continue to test and review customer reaction and experiences over the next several months in order to evaluate expanded use."
