TOKYO -- Takefuji Corp. announced it has developed an iris recognition identification system with Oki Electric Industry Co., according to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun.
ATMs equipped with the system will match users with prerecorded images of their irises. Takefuji plans to introduce the new ATMs at selected stores in Tokyo in February 1999 before adopting the system nationwide.
Takefuji claims the new system's misidentification ratio is less than one in 100,000.
Takefuji is in the process of connecting its first ATM equipped with iris-based identification to its host computer system. The firm plans to offer users two identification alternatives: iris recognition and a card; or iris and users' birth date or phone number.
