Taiwanese bank takes a look at facial recognition for ATMs

In a pilot test, CTBC Bank is assessing the technology as a potential replacement for ATM cards and PINs.

August 11, 2015

CTBC Bank, one of Taiwan's largest privately held financial institutions, is piloting facial recognition technology for use in cardless ATM transactions.

According to a report by Finextra, the technology is being paired with Hitachi VeinID, a finger vein-reader which already is deployed in Japan, North America, Europe, and the U.K.

As implemented at CTBC, facial and finger vein ID take the place of both card and PIN. The pilot program also includes the use of biometrics for employee identification.

Just two months ago, Chinese technology company Tzekwan and China's Tsinghua University announced that they had collaborated to develop the world's first market-ready ATM to employ facial ID.
