ATM foreign fees charged by 10 Chicago banks -- an average $1.34 per transaction -- have changed very little in the last six months. This, according to a twice-yearly survey by Bankrate.com.
On the other hand, the average Chicago ATM surcharge is $1.29, up 3.2 percent from six months ago. That's still less than the national average of $1.43, the survey reported.
Nationally, ATM surcharges paid by Americans are steadily escalating. Up 47 percent from two years ago, they are expected to reach $2.2 billion this year.
Feeling the bite the most are Chicago and Washington, D.C., ATM customers, according to an August survey conducted by Moebs Services Inc. Card users there pay the highest median ATM fees in the country.
