Surcharge session on tap at ATMIA event in Australia

August 4, 2003

CAPE TOWN, South Africa -- "Pacific ATMs 02," the ATM Industry Association's second conference and exhibition on Australian soil, will take place in Sydney May 5-6, 2004.

Among the items on the agenda: an ATM Security Forum, an "ATMs in Asia" session featuring speakers from China and Korea, Technology User Groups, a panel discussion on "PIN versus Biometrics: Costs and Benefits" and a special session on the impact of surcharging on ATM markets in the United States and United Kingdom, a topic requested by board members of ATMIA Australasia as a result of the imminent introduction of surcharging in Australia.

Participants in the special session on surcharging include Tom Hannon, chairman and founder of UK ISO Hanco ATM Systems after the sale of his Georgia-based Hanco Systems to eFunds in 2000, and Cindy Ballard, executive vice president of Pulse EFT Association, which was very involved in the arbitration case which led to the ability to levy surcharging fees in the U.S. Ballard has managed several research projects since the arbitration to analyze consumers' reactions and attitudes toward ATM fees.

"She is probably as informed on the subject as anyone in the EFT business in the United States," said Stan Paur, president and chief executive of Pulse, about Ballard.

Other confirmed participants include Cashcard Australia, the largest provider of ATMs in Australia (with roughly 20 percent of the market); Westpac Bank; Visa International; Adelaide Bank; the Australian Bankers Association; the Fraud Squad of New South Wales; ATM Solutions Australasia; Linfox Armaguard (Australia's biggest cash-in-transit group); Diebold Asia; NCR; Triton; Nautilus Hyosung; Lyle Elias, chairman of ATMIA, speaking on the evolving payments landscape; the Biometrics Institute and eFunds International, among others.
