South Africa's largest financial union is warning residents that ATMs will not be working Friday and online banking could also be disrupted due to a strike, according to an Eyewitness News report. The union, Sasbo, is striking in an effort to protect jobs from automation after several banks announced restructuring plans.
Sasbo claims that more than 45,000 of the 73,000 finance sector employees will participate in the strike.
The South African Revenue Service said the strike could affect tax payments and refunds.
First National Bank has said it wants customers to use online and mobile phone banking, but Joe Kokela, the union's general secretary, said these services will not be working.
