Spark ATM Systems reports an increase in ATM deployments

February 6, 2011

Spark ATM Systems deployed a record 72 ATMs throughout South Africa in December, company officials said. The Cape Town-based independent ATM deployer now operates a network of 1,100 ATMs nationwide.

“As consumer confidence returns, businesses are quickly appreciating the benefits of housing cash withdrawal points in their outlets,” said Spark ATM officials. During the economic downturn, businesses determined they had to be more resourceful in attracting customers, said Marc Sternberg, managing director of Spark ATM Systems.

“Store owners realized they needed to use all revenue-generating and cost-savings methods they could find in order to survive,” Sternberg said.

Rob Kucera, general manager of Arabella Western Cape Hotel and Spa, which is located an hour from Cape Town, said Spark ATM Systems installed an ATM on hotel property. The machine has helped to increase purchases at shops located in the hotel, Kucera said.

“The Spark ATM is a value-added benefit that is fully appreciated by our guests,” Kucera said. “We have also noticed increased turnover at our various retail points due to the on-premise ATM machine.”

Dave Cohen, a shop owner, said the recent installation of an ATM has increased foot traffic in his stores.

“Our customers like to use the Spark ATMs in our shops because they feel safe,” said Cohen, who owns Alphen KwikSpar and Boulevard KwikSpar. "This brings extra foot traffic into the store and then, armed with cash these new customers go on to spend more.”
