Solar-powered mobile branch takes ATMs where the customers are

January 25, 2017

Nigeria's Wema Bank PLC has rolled out a new mobile branch, "Wema Bank on Wheels," that will be accessible to users across the country, according to a press release.

"At Wema Bank, we are committed to making banking as convenient as it can be for our customers and we achieve this using technology, while adhering to global best practices," Wema Bank head of e-business Damola Bolodeoku said in the release. "We are taking banking services to Nigerians, no matter where they are. Being an environmentally responsible company, our mobile branch is powered by solar energy; a first in the Nigerian banking industry."

The bank had been considering the addition of a mobile branch for some time; the project was fast-tracked when road construction made one of its branches impossible to get to, said Kemi Aina, head of customer service management at the bank, in the release.

"For everyone we have not been able to reach through our internet banking, mobile banking or USSD banking services; Wema Bank is on wheels and it is coming to you wherever you may be," Aina said.

According to the release, one of the major benefits of the mobile branch is its ability to provide a visible banking presence with a lower facility cost — especially in underserved markets, the release said.
