The Sioux Falls, South Dakota Police Department is taking steps against the rising tide of crypto ATM scams by placing signs next to the ATMs. These signs warn customers of fraud, such as when a scammer tells a victim to deposit cash into the ATM to pay for fees, according to a report by Dakota News Now.
The signs tell customers to always know the identity of the person they are sending money to on the ATM.
"It's not uncommon to see some of these victims put tens of thousands of dollars into these crypto ATMS. Which then, it's very hard for us to recover those funds once they go into those ATMs. Which is why we're trying to put up these signs as a last-ditch effort to hopefully cause that or have that person maybe pause and reflect on what they're doing if somebody's telling them to put this money into the ATM," Sergeant Jake Harris said in the report.
