Siberia says 'da' to solar-powered ATMs

July 16, 2012

The Siberian region of Tuva recently welcomed its first solar ATM, with more possibly following.

According to a news story at rt.com, the ATM is powered by 16 solar batteries affixed to the top. The ATM was produced in China and assembled in Novosibirsk.

The solar-powered cash machine will provide banking services to members of a major archaeological expedition working on-site in Tuva, and will travel with the expedition along its planned path.

Solar energy has been used in Tuva for years, due to high electricity costs and a decentralized power supply that affects about 30 percent of the territory.
