Secret Service warns of card skimming at ATMs

April 29, 2010

Jody Barr of WIS10 in Columbia, SC reports that the Secret Service sayscard skimming cases are up, five times higher so far this year. Skimmers are devices that are quick and easy to install on ATMs. The transactions go through, but the electronic information from the magnetic stripe is captured. Some skimmers even have miniature cameras to steal the PIN. Customers should be on the lookout for these devices.

"When you go to that ATM and just pause for a quick second and take a look at that card reader, if that card reader looks a little bit different, a little unusual. Take the next step and see if you can move it," said Secret Service agent Mike Williams. "You can see that this device was simply attached to the ATM with two-sided tape."
