Second-coldest place on earth gets its first ATM

July 18, 2012

The town of Drass in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir got its first ATM today, courtesy of the state-owned Jammu and Kashmir Bank.

According to a report at IBN Live, Drass is second only to Siberia as the coldest inhabited place on the globe. Wintertime temperatures there can fall to as low as minus 49 degrees Fahrenheit.

"Our expansion plan is focused on delivering banking services at people's doorstep regardless of where they stay," said Jammu and Kashmir Bank vice president Tafazal Hussain at the ATM inauguration ceremony. He said that the bank would be opening additional ATMs in coming months.
