A scammer posing as a boss of a gas station in Carlsborg, Washington, attempted to get two employees to take cash from the safe registers and the ATM for an emergency pickup. The scammer allegedly told the employees to download a third party app and call a number for instructions, according to a report by Fox 13 Seattle.
Sherif's deputies were called after someone saw two individuals striking an ATM with a tool. When deputies arrived, the employees explained that the scammer told them how to break open the ATM and said there was insurance for the damage. When deputies called the scammer's number, the individual admitted to it and mocked them saying they would never be able to find him.
No cash was stolen from the business but the ATM was damaged.
"Scammers often impersonate business owners, managers, or corporate representatives to trick employees into releasing money or property. If you receive unusual instructions to handle cash, safes or ATMs, verify directly with your employer through a known phone number before taking action," The Clallam County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
