A government committee in Saudi Arabia has given the kingdom's banks one year to install and enable satellite monitoring technology for all ATMs.
The committee's mandate calls for the placement of electronic chips in ATMs and CIT vans, according to a report in the English language publication Arabian Business, quoting the Arabic daily Makkah.
With the chips installed, machines and vehicles could be monitored and tracked via satellite, deterring would-be thieves and vandals.
Additionally, the report said, the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency is investigating options for causing cash to self-destruct if the ATM monitoring system detects a physical attack.
