Saudi bank accepts bill payments at Diebold ATMs

October 20, 2003

NORTH CANTON, Ohio - Diebold, Incorporated (NYSE:DBD) says it has successfully implemented the first 3010 bulk-cash acceptance terminals with barcode reader for the National Commercial Bank (NCB), the largest bank in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East.

With this technology, NCB can accept both cash deposits and payment of utility bills through the integration of a barcode reader in the cash acceptance machine, according to a news release.

The 3010 units were part of an order for more than 200 Diebold ATMs placed by NCB. (See related story Diebold's Opteva advances into the Middle East)

Customers can bring their electricity or telephone bills and have the integrated barcode unit scan the amount due. The customer can then place bulk notes in the unit's input hopper, loading them short edge first in any orientation. The terminal processes the notes and accumulates the value of all valid bills as they are accepted. The customer can cancel the process at any time and have all of the notes returned.

For cash deposits, as notes are recognized and validated, they are transferred to an escrow area. Incorrect currency or denominations and unrecognizable notes are immediately returned to the customer.

Once all of the notes have been processed and the customer has confirmed the transaction, the accepted notes are transferred from the escrow area into a bulk cassette, and the customer receives immediate credit for deposited cash.

Diebold Professional Services in the Middle East installed the 3010 terminals, in cooperation with Alhamrani Universal Company (Universal), Diebold's distributor in Saudi Arabia.

Al-Sharif Khalid Al Ghalib, head of Retail Banking at NCB said in the release that NCB branches accept bill payments, the majority of which are cash transactions, for customers and non-customers alike.

"With the availability of this new cash/utility Diebold unit, we will be able to migrate cash customers to utilize this new solution and eliminate current long lines at our tellers' level," he said.
