The Richmond, California police department has seen an increase in smash-and-grab robberies against ATM users. With this technique, after a customer withdraws cash from an ATM, the thieves watch where they place the money, then they smash the car window and grab the purse or wallet with the cash and flee the scene, according to a report by Kron 4.

The thieves have at times followed the victims for several blocks from the bank, waiting for them to stop at a red light before moving in to smash the car window.

Police recommend citizens lock their vehicles, don't sit in your vehicle upon completing the ATM withdraw and secure their purse in a trunk or locked glove box, according to the report.
