Rabobank takes step to stop ATM explosive attacks

May 4, 2017

Rabobank, the Netherlands' third largest bank, is taking steps to protect its ATMs, the people near them and the buildings that house them from explosive attacks.

The bank said it will dispatch security guards to protect ATMs — particularly those in buildings that also serve as residences, according to a report by the BBC.

Another Dutch bank, ING, is said to be considering the use of ATM guards, as well.

Within the past month, police have had to evacuate people from their homes on two separate occasions while they deactivated explosive devices at ATMs. Last year, the Netherlands experienced 79 ATM explosions, the BBC said.

Between them, the two banks have closed 130 ATMs, at least in part due to the threat of damage or injury from explosive attacks, according to the report.
