PITTSBURGH -- PNC Bank is one of the first banks in the country to dispense mall gift certificates from ATMs following the recent launch of a program in 17 malls across the U.S. owned and managed by Glimcher Properties Limited Trust. The gift certificates, printed by MidAmerica Gift Certificate Company, are dispensed from a separate, non-cash cassette. They may be used at any store or for selected services at participating malls. PNC piloted a similar program in 1998 at malls owned by the Rouse Company. Based on that pilot, holiday sales of the gift certificates are expected to be brisk. "This is just one part of the unique offerings we're bringing to the retail environment to expand and enhance the use of ATMs so that they can serve as one stop shopping centers for consumers," said James S. Walker, PNC group vice president for Self-Service Banking. PNC also dispenses prepaid phone cards at ATMs in selected mall and branch locations. PNC manages almost 2,000 off-site ATMs in addition to nearly 900 branch machines.
