Philips Semiconductors and IBM Research are planning to jointly develop multi-function smart cards for applications with high security demands, such as banking, electronic purse, medical records, secure authentication and customer loyalty programs.
The new system will allow companies to issue a single card that supports applications from multiple sources but keeps the information from each source separate and protected from the other sources.
The smart cards will be based on Philips' smart card processor and incorporate an operation system and enhanced JavaCard virtual machine software from IBM.
