A surge in unemployed individuals using Bank of America's ATMs to withdraw unemployment payments have left several of those ATMs out of cash.
Over 8 million people have filed for unemployment benefits in California since the pandemic lockdown. Unemployed individuals can receive benefit cards that act much like a debit card, allowing them to receive funds immediately in Orange County through BOA, per a report on the Orange County Register.
A number of residents from Santa Ana to Placentia took to social media to complain that either BOA's ATMs were empty of cash or the entire branch had been closed.
"Our ATMs have experienced unprecedented levels of use during this health crisis, especially around the 1st and 15th of the month due to our servicing the record number of California EDD cards that get funded on those days," Colleen Haggerty, a senior vice president and spokeswoman for BOA said. "We have increased maintenance of our ATM network, with 95% of our ATMs in Orange County currently operating normally and the remainder to be replenished as soon as possible."
Haggerty said customers can use more than 50 financial centers across the county that are open and have cash.
In a related story, Bank of America also experienced a minor computer glitch last week that showed inaccurate account balances for clients in North Carolina. The glitch has been fixed according to a BOA spokesperson.
