According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, Omron Corp. and Hitachi Ltd. plan to join forces on the development of a next-generation ATM with high-performance multimedia and Internet functions. The two companies are leading suppliers of ATMs to financial institutions in Asia. Hitachi launched its ATM business in 1979, while Omron was one of the first companies to develop a cash dispenser that used magnetic cards in 1969. According to Hitachi and Omron, the joint project was launched on Nov. 11. The two companies hope to maintain a strong position in the Asian ATM market.
