NuSource to incorporate AppGuard for ATM security

AppGuard protects ATMs against new viruses, zero-day malware, ransomware, targeted attacks and other known and unknown threats, NuSource says.

December 22, 2014

Cybersecurity provider Blue Ridge Networks is partnering with transaction solutions provider NuSource Financial to incorporate AppGuard security on ATMs, according to a news release.

NuSource said that, working with Blue Ridge, it had confirmed that AppGuard protects against new viruses, zero-day malware, ransomware, targeted attacks, and other forms of known and unknown threats using patented isolation and containment technologies.

According to the release, AppGuard achieves the following functions without the need for scanning or frequent updates:

  • prevents unauthorized scripts or malware from executing a first-stage attack on the ATM, including malware from a USB stick or CD-ROM used for maintenance;
  • does not rely on scanning, detection, or signature identification to provide protection, thus reducing system overhead;
  • provides 24/7/365 protection without updates or patches, mitigating risks due to ATM system maintenance delays;
  • enforces an orderly process throughout ATM maintenance, with a security audit to maintain system integrity; and
  • works on systems that are not being patched or updated on a regular basis, ensuring optimized security for ATMs with vulnerable software.

"AppGuard was easy to integrate into our ATM systems and didn't require us to make any changes to our architecture or operations," said NuSource President Jon Erpelding.

"It enables our customers to plan and implement forward-thinking strategies, while ensuring high safety levels for the consumer," said Blue Ridge President and COO Mike Fumai.
