Nine killed as police ambush gang during ATM explosive attack

Acting on a tip, police in Brazil staged a massive ambush on Saturday against a 15-member gang believed responsible for explosive attacks on ATMs. Nine gang members were killed in the shootout that followed.

According to an AP report, 80 police officers converged on the gang after the first of what they said were five planned explosive attacks on ATMs in the rural town of Itamonte.

In addition to those killed, three suspects were injured and one police officer was shot in the arm. Police arrested five suspects, but a sixth escaped.
