Nigerian police will prosecute protestors who attack or vandalize ATMs as robbers. Citizens have been increasingly frustrated since the central bank ordered older bank notes replaced with newer ones, which has led to shortages of cash, according to a Reuters report.
Angry customers, in places ranging from Lagos and states in southern Nigeria, have vandalized ATMs and lit tires on the streets.
"Let us get this straight, it's not a peaceful protest when you are coming out and attacking ATMs (automated teller machines), attacking banks or any financial institution. It is robbery and we will treat you like an armed robber," Olumuyiwa Adejobi, spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, said in the report.
The Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions has told members not to work in states where customers were attacking bank branches.
