New ATM Security Association inducts members, sets priorities

The ATM Security Association aims to bring together ATM-makers, suppliers, deployers and law enforcement to identify and address ATM security threats.

July 6, 2015

The ATM Security Association held its inaugural meeting last month in the Netherlands. During the meeting, industry members representing more than 40 percent of the global ATM installed base were inducted as official members of the association, according to a press release.

Initiated in late 2014, the ATM Security Association seeks to bring together ATM manufacturers, suppliers, operators, financial institutions and authorities to build a neutral and secure platform for the analysis of identified threats.

Ultimately, the group hopes to deliver faster and more comprehensive information, to enable proactive cross-vendor recommendations on countermeasures, and to develop relevant industry security standards.

"We are encouraged by the amount of interest in membership that we have received," said ASA finance and marketing directorJoerg Engelhardt in the release. "It's exciting to see key players in the financial space team up to combat the most pressing security issues in the industry."

During the meeting, association members established working groups that will compile information on recognized and potential ATM attack scenarios. Groups will focus on software security, encryption, skimming and cassette security. Their objective is to rapidly develop and implement countermeasures at a global level. Findings and results from the working groups will be shared with specific industry groups, the release said.

Parties interested in ASA membership will find additional information about the association online.
