NEC Corp., through its NEC Taiwan Ltd. subsidiary, has provisioned a facial recognition system for ATMs operated by E. Sun Commercial Bank Ltd. of Taiwan.
The NEC system uses "NeoFace," a facial recognition artificial intelligence engine from "Bio-Idiom," the NEC portfolio of advanced biometric authentication technologies.
According to a press release, the E. Sun bank machines are the world's first facial recognition automation ATMs with one-time password technology. The bank currently is operating the ATMs at five locations in Taiwan.
When using the facial recognition-equipped ATMs for the first time, users insert their ATM card and have a photo of their face taken with a camera in the ATM.
Within 60 seconds, registering users receive a one-time password on their smartphone, which they then enter at the ATM to complete registration. With registration completed, they can withdraw cash from enabled machines via facial recognition and PIN authentication.
To prevent fraudulent activity, NEC anti-spoofing technology uses AI to detect whether the ATM user is a real person or an inanimate photo, image or mask.
