India's Muthoot Pappachan Group has launched a new subsidiary, MPG Security Group, to deliver "technologically advanced security services through emergency response teams."
According to a report by Economic Times, the new company will focus particularly on the banking sector and ATMs.
Indian banks typically station security guards overnight at ATMs to prevent attacks on the machines and their users. However, banks say the cost is burdensome and media reports of attacks on security guards — sometimes fatal — are frequent.
MPG Security Group proposes to replace nighttime security guards with manned control units that monitor ATMs and dispatch security teams to sensor-equipped ATMs when they alert to a disturbance.
"Electronic response teams" include uniformed security specialists armed with nonlethal weapons, GPRS, wireless communicators and a vehicle with alarm systems. The teams "can handle any security related exigencies from 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.," Muthoot said in the article.
Response time is typically 20 to 30 minutes, however Muthoot told the publication that this timeline could be cut in half if the company recruits enough customers.
