Glasgow Evening Times: The Royal Bank of Scotland has been condemned as "despicable" for locating fee-charging ATMs in poorer areas.
Anniesland MP John Robertson said the Royal Bank of Scotland -- in the guise of independent ATM provider Hanco, which it purchased in July -- was charging people £1.50 and more for withdrawals in the poorest areas of his Glasgow constituency.
During Commons exchanges on future business, he slammed the bank's "despicable conduct," adding: "They are effectively levying a tax on the poor. In the rich part of the constituency there isn't a problem. These people can afford to travel and go to the free ATMs."
Banks should be "brought to book" and rules imposed on ATM charges, particularly in poorer areas, said Robertson, who has tabled a motion demanding banks guarantee free withdrawal facilities at ATMs in disadvantaged areas.
