Mobile phones to drive smart card market

February 26, 2002

LANGPORT, U.K.-- According to SJB Research's new Smart Card report, the worldwide boom in digital mobile telephones is going to be a major driver for the smart card market.

"As well as the obvious point that every GSM digital mobile phone requires a smart card, we also see a new trend emerging in the shape of the mobile phone with two card slots; since it is becoming so widely accepted as a remote terminal for telephony, there is a good chance that GSM phones will become widely accepted as a remote terminal for banking and for virtual shopping," said David Jones, co-author of the report.

"There is also a still unquantifiable surge to come in demand for smart cards as an access medium to the new wave of subscription television and radio services," he added.

Other applications analyzed in the report include: credit, debit and stored value cards; remote payments; public telephones; public transport; utilities; leisure; traffic management; welfare; road tolls; national identity; healthcare; campus cards; employee cards; and customer loyalty.

The next big push in smart card chip technology will take place in the area of dual interface chips. These will initially be required for combined transport and payment applications, according to the report.

The 400-page report is available in print for $849 or on CD-ROM for $2,467. For more details:
