Recognizing that its product line lacked an ATM for the low end of the market, Wincor Nixdorf introduces the ProCash 1000.

October 25, 2000

Acknowledging that its ProCash machines are a little too high end for the majority of the price-conscious U.S. retail ATM market, Wincor Nixdorfis introducing a lower-end, lower-priced product that will likely be sold in North America only.

The new ProCash 1000 will occupy the same market niche as the Cross MiniBank 2000, Tidel Ignition Series, Triton 9600, NCR MCD and Diebold CashSource Plus. This corner of the market, which primarily deploys machines that retail for $6,000 to $8,000, continues to show surprising strength even as transaction volumes drop.

"We wanted to complete our product portfolio," said Julia Pallasch, Wincor Nixdorf's director of marketing for Self-Service Products in the U.S. "This machine does so, especially in the U.S."

Perhaps the most striking difference between the ProCash 1000 and the rest of Wincor Nixdorf's product line is its DOS-based operating system. All of Wincor Nixdorf's other ATMs run on Windows NT. This departure brings down the price, Pallasch said, adding that DOS is still a level above the firmware found in many low-end machines.

Wincor Nixdorf's technical team is working on migrating some of the applications that run on NT to the DOS platform. A notable example, Pallasch said, is a popular animated advertising screen/coupon combo that the company has demonstrated widely at trade shows.

While the machine doesn't offer as much functionality as the rest of the ProCash line, Pallasch said it consciously avoids the beige, boxy look favored by other manufacturers. "It looks just like its big brothers. You realize right away it's a Wincor Nixdorf machine."

In addition to price, another top concern of the retail market – where floor space is a valuable commodity -- is size. With a footprint of 3.12 square feet, the ProCash 1000 is smaller than some of its competitors.

Other features include a color monitor, electronic journal and remote diagnostic, download and monitoring capabilities. Among the optional add-ons are a Level 1 vault and up to four cassettes.

Wincor Nixdorf will debut the new machine at next week's Advanced ATM Conference in Orlando, Fla. Sharing booth space with the company in Orlando will be IBM Canada, its exclusive distributor in that country. Pallasch believes there may be even greater potential for the ProCash 1000 there since the Canadian retail market still lags behind the U.S. in number of installed machines.

IBM is a valuable partner because of its "huge infrastructure," she said. "IBM will help Wincor Nixdorf strengthen its competitive position in the North American marketplace."

This machine is the first produced by Wincor Nixdorf exclusively for the North American market. Since its October 1999 purchase byfinancial investors Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. Ltd. (KKR) and GSCapital Partners, L.P. (Goldman Sachs), the German company has stepped up its efforts to increase North American market share.

Pallasch said the ProCash 1000 is slated to go into field production in November.
