Masked gunman kills guard, escapes empty-handed

February 18, 2004

DETROIT -- A gunman in a black ski mask ambushed the crew of an armored car as it loaded cash from a bank ATM yesterday, killing one guard and critically wounding another. The gunman apparently fled without any money, police said.

The gunman walked around a corner of the Comerica Bank branch, where three guards had parked their truck, and opened fire with a rifle, said police spokesman Derek Jones in an Associated Press story. The man fled in a white van, Jones said.

Police later found the van and an empty money bag, but Jones said no money was missing from the armored car and the bag apparently was empty when it was taken.

Jones said the uninjured guard drove the armored car away after his co-workers were shot at, as is standard procedure. The guards were taken to a local hospital.

The slain guard's wife said in the article that her husband wanted to leave his job because he was worried about a robbery of another armored car last week in Detroit.
