Lincoln, Nebraska now has an ordinance requiring warning signs on bitcoin ATMs. The signs aim to protect citizens from scams, according to a report by 1011 Now.

The ordinance, Municipal Code Chapter 9.70, mandates businesses to have a written warning label on a bitcoin ATM in their store. The warning urges victims to hang up on scammers who try to get them to deposit money into bitcoin ATMs. Owners have until Dec. 24 to put the warning stickers on, which are provided by the Lincoln Police Department.

There are currently around 100 bitcoin ATMs in Lincoln. AARP Nebraska volunteers will distribute the stickers along with informational materials to bitcoin ATM locations.

"AARP Nebraska remains dedicated to partnering with communities statewide to protect older Nebraskans from these scams. Our volunteer Fraud Fighters are raising awareness about how scammers exploit cryptocurrency kiosks because once money is sent through a digital wallet, it is nearly impossible to trace or recover," Todd Stubbendieck, state director for AARP Nebraska, told the news outlet.
