KAL publishing free, open source XFS SP framework for ATMs

June 10, 2021

Imagine an ATM so small you could mistake it for a POS device — so small it doesn't even an operating system and runs on batteries. These features are on the horizon thanks to XFS4IoT, the new generation of the XFS standard born in December 2020, according to Steve Hensley, EVP of global sales of KAL, an ATM software company.

"It is OS‑agnostic, cloud‑native and has built‑in end‑to‑end security for each component," he said in a recent blog. "It is time to remove the limitations of the past and create a new blank canvas."

In an effort to remove such limitations, KAL is publishing a free and open-source implementation of XFS4IoT, allowing hardware manufacturers to quickly create XFS4IoT SPs. It works with hardware from multiple vendors, and provides banks with greater choice, enhanced security, plug-and-play hardware and lower costs.

To jumpstart adoption, KAL has formed an open‑source workgroup that includes over 70 companies and 200 ATM stakeholders, according to the release. To join the group, send an email here.
